Reiven raised on her toes to reach out the upper shelves of the bookstand, trying hard to pull the blue covered book out. Suddenly the book released from its place causing another one fall onto the ground loudly. She felt her cheeks burning of embarrassment as all the disapproving glances turning over. The need of moving away urged her to grab the book which was still lying on the floor and rushed out of the library.
Till she stepped out of the House of Elrond, she kept walking quickly along the halls. Her steps only slowed down as long as she felt the warm touch of calming afternoon breeze. “Now.. now..” she said quietly looking at the book in her hand and turned the first pages. The book was obviously about music… There were pages of notes and Lyrics she noticed at the first glance.
“Music?” she laughed gently “and of course poetry..”
Her eyes passed briefly over some of the lyrics
An Elven-maid there was of old,
A shining star by day:
Her mantle white was hemmed with gold,
Her shoes of silver-grey.
A star was bound upon her brows,
A light was on her hair
As sun upon the golden boughs
In Lórien the fair.
Her hair was long, her limbs were white,
And fair she was and free;
And in the wind she went as light
As leaf of linden-tree.
Beside the falls of Nimrodel,
By water clear and cool,
Her voice as falling silver fell
Into the shining pool.
“Nimrodel…” name recalled a fair melody and its story, the tale of Amroth and Nimrodel. “Not the happiest one…” she murmured and suddenly realized where her steps ended. This is where Tinuchen took her the last time they meet, a secret hill where you can see the whole valley. Reiven climbed up to the big rock and sat on its flattened top feeling its warmth. Closing her eyes turned her face towards the sun and started humming the melody as far as she could remember.
Where now she wanders none can tell,
In sunlight or in shade;
For lost of yore was Nimrodel
And in the mountains strayed.
The elven-ship in haven grey
Beneath the mountain-lee
Awaited her for many a day
Beside the roaring sea.
A wind by night in Northern lands
Arose, and loud it cried,
And drove the ship from elven-strands
Across the streaming tide.
When dawn came dim the land was lost,
The mountains sinking grey
Beyond the heaving waves that tossed
Their plumes of blinding spray.
Amroth beheld the fading shore
Now low beyond the swell,
And cursed the faithless ship that bore
Him far from Nimrodel.
Of old he was an Elven-king,
A lord of tree and glen,
When golden were the boughs in spring
In fair Lothlórien.
From helm to sea they saw him leap,
As arrow from the string,
And dive into the water deep,
As mew upon the wing.
The wind was in his flowing hair,
The foam about him shone;
Afar they saw him strong and fair
Go riding like a swan.
But from the West has come no word,
And on the Hither Shore
No tidings Elven-folk have heard
Of Amroth evermore.
Reiven slightly opened her heavy lids wondering if there are such strong feelings exist in real. “Is it me building walls all around? Is it me keeping them under heavy locks?”
She remembered the strength of fear kept her stunned in the school of Tham Mirdain and desperation which made her hit that man with the staff. She recalled the words of Tinuchen…
“Sometimes we have no choice, we must fight to defend our lives but what makes the difference is how much we try to keep our humanity even such circumstances” he wrote and accepted the fact of her interfering in a fight naturally. She remembered him talking about how earth spreads life everywhere in Imladris.
“In the desert there is more death than life” he had written..
“I must have misjudged him by looking at his young and innocent appearance.” thought Reiven and wondered how someone who has hardened by life and death could be able to protect innocence. Remembered how he was scared, how he was lost… and how he cried…
“He looks so fragile yet he is far from it…” Reiven sighed softly as peering into the distance
“But I learned how strong his will is” were the last thoughts that she voiced before getting lost into her considerations…
