This document doesn’t tell you how Adler Buck and Goldlily Goofer married, and then took Honeythumb as their surname before leaving Lindelby and making their way to Enedwaith. Because it happened seven generates ago and as it is told, it is another story.
Honeythumbs of Enedwaith were wealthy, with their great burrow and more than fifty members of family also were well-respected among their kin. Yet, most found them peculiar, because their wealth was coming from treasure hunting. As you can see, it is not something hobbity like farming, or even doing trade with other folks. But they were generous to others, so no one minded it, because everyone could live with some oddity. Till the year Saelo was born…
It was a dark and stormy night when Saelo opened his eyes and his first cry sounded alongside with a thunder. When beautiful Mindreda took him into her arms for the first time, the first thing she realized was Saelo's curious eyes inspecting everything around, after a few moments of his first breath. She smiled and looked into Gerbech's (Saelo's father) eyes. "Gerbech," she said, "don't you think he carries his name already?" The thing with Gerbech and Mindreda was they could easily read each other's mind, and the least known thing was they both knew some Elvish. Gerbech nodded and whispered his name. "Saelo, be it.”
Things were not so bad till Saelo's first birthday. But after that wolves of plains became wilder and their howls started to freeze everyone's blood. As if it was not enough, some kind of big dogs appeared among them. Men of Enedwaith began to charge and attack at each other and thus, the peaceful days of Enedwaith ended. But it was not the worst thing happened to Honeythumbs.
On Goldlily's (Saelo's sister) seventh birthday a wild cry was heard out of the great burrow, and at the same time something heavy bumped into the door. Before the hobbits could figure out what was going on, the door broke inside and bunch of brigands jumped in with swords on hands. They didn't seem like the Big Folk they used to see but it was clear what they were after. Although all Honeythumbs (even ladies) are well trained on fighting with daggers, they were away from their weapons that night and most had enough wine. As you can guess, they all fled outside while the ones who could hold the brigands for a while and then they followed their relatives as well. Two brigands died, three of Honeythumbs wounded and all the riches they gathered for years was lost. Saelo never could forget the flames rising from his home through the night since then.
Elden (Saelo’s grandfather) was a wise man, as he knew this day would come one day. That’s why he had buried some of the riches they had found (or made by trading). The next day he the dug chest out and shared everything fairly among his family members. Following that, all Honeythumbs took their own ways: some strolled to south to find a place to live and making their life with trading. Some went to Ettenmoors to join their distant relatives. Only Elden and his wife Donna went back to Lindelby, whence the Honeythumbs came six hundred and fifty years ago.
But Saelo’s father had other plans. He took the road of north and came to Erebor with his family. Although it was something new for Dwarves to have hobbits among them, after a few months they were a part of Erebor already. First of all, dwarves knew many ruins, and ruins meant treasures most of the time. Dwarves were fair in payments.
Treasure hunting was not only things that made hobbits famous. They were always welcomed in parties as well, because merry hobbit tunes weren’t loved only in Erebor, but also in Dale, even in Lake Town too. But it was not all. Time to time, Saelo and his father joined dwarf patrols time to time, because their ability of walking silently helped them to ambush orc and goblin groups wondering around. On the other hand, picking their pockets before the ambush was always fun for hobbits. Thus, the life was nice and peaceful for them.
But still, there was something bothering the hobbits. Although everything was good and merry, lack of hobbit-sense was shading the sun (and mind you, hobbit-sense is important even for Honeythumbs, although it might not look like that). So, they decided to move to lands closer to other hobbits. It caused a lot of fuss, however – because Saelo was wanting to see more places, because he was sure that there were other places with full of Hobbits, meanwhile his parents were insisting to go back to Lindelby. But suddenly Goldlily spoke, and told that Saelo was right, there should’ve been another place to settle down. It was surprising for everyone, because Goldlily was known for her calm and too friendly nature, it was very rare she was sounding against something, especially her parents. However, it caused Gerbech and Mindreda to think over the whole situation once again. At the end, they decided their children were enough capable of taking care of themselves, thus, they let the siblings go by themselves.
Goldlily and Saelo traveled across the Eriador for a long while, yet, no matter where they went, they couldn’t find the peace they looked for. But one day they heard of a Hobbit country lying in the South and decided to take their chance there too. Both came to the Shire and the moment Saelo stepped in this green country, tears that been frozen in his chest started to melt and coming down of his eyes. Because he knew what he found: a new home for his weary heart.
