Episode 11 Piper sees the Mountains
‘I guess that’s that. The only thing left before returning to the Shire is to see the mountains,’ Piper told Taurdir.
‘I shall take you to Hithaeglir,’ said the elf. ‘You will need to dress warmly, but with me as your guide you should be relatively safe. We cannot go far. The passes through the northern mountains are closed this time of year. But I think your curiosity will be satisfied.’
‘I wonder what he means by “relatively”’ wondered Piper.
The next day Taurdir led Piper through a steep winding path into the mountains. Cirith Imladris it was the called, the Cleft of Rivendell.
‘This m-must be s-s-snow,’ said the shivering Piper. ‘It falls v-v-very seldom in The Shire, and then o-o-only in the Northf-f-farthing.’
The elf seemed not effected at all by the freezing temperature.
'I hope you have seen enough to satisfy you, Piper,' said Taurdir. 'It is too cold to go any further.'
'I ag-ag-ag-ag-gree,' said the hobbit through chattering teeth.
Hobbit and elf returned to the warmer clime of the Rivendell Valley. Piper warmed himself in the Hall of Fire, where he slurped hot soup and drank warm mead mulled with fruit and spices to chase away the chill.
