Khalis stirred from his meditation in the dead of night with a start, every one of his senses reaching out seeking what had brought him out of his restful state. As his senses probed into the night air he was aware of a bird waking from its nest in a nearby tree, but his mind was also reaching for what had disturbed him.
There was a shadow something he could not see with his minds eye at the edge of his periphery, he recalled the singing he had heard earlier that night in the Hall of Fire.
But then a shadow seemed to choke the singing and it became a piercing cry, a cry pleading for an ending, the cry of a spirit in endless torment.
