Through all my life, through all my years,
I craved that which I lacked.
A constant hunt, an endless chase,
As sins, like mountains, stacked.
Revenge I wished, revenge I drank
-My thirst was left unquenched.
I sought to soothe, to smother it,
In wine, in blood, it drenched.
I called it right, I called it pure,
I justified the vile;
The hungry beast kept gorging on
And crept beneath my smile.
This void within I strove to fill,
To pacify the storm,
Yet more it grew with every kill,
As death became the norm.
Within my grasp lay happiness,
Yet on the shrine of greed
I sacrificed her hopes and dreams,
And thus the beast was freed.
This trail of tears upon my tread
Shall never be washed clean.
'Twas my own hand that ruin sowed.
Now loss became routine.
Oh lady Death, who seeketh me
To claim me at thy side,
I ask thee, lay me by my kin,
Whom by my hands have died.
And sing for me no mournful songs,
And leave my name unwept.
And strike from thought my memory,
My passing I accept.

“Beneath the grave of every man,
A deeper grave is filled.
With all the things he nearly held
And now he never will.”
