The Elven Maid

The Elven Maid

There was an elven maid my dear
and she was fair as love
she sang as sweetly as you like dear
sweet as the birds above

Her hair was raven black my dear
her eyes were ocean blue
her smile would steal your heart my dear
and this the maiden knew

The elven men would flock my dear
to hear her sing and play
a thousand hearts she won my dear
a thousand she did slay

Yes she would toy with any, dear
who gave his heart away
she said it was her right my dear
with hearts that came her way

But flirting looks and ways my dear
are not affection's way
her heart inside was cold my dear
and she was known to say:

Love me for my looks my dear,
my love is skin deep only
if you should love me true my dear
you'll only end up lonely

'Twas thus she did excuse my dear
the torment of their heart
many an elven swain my dear
in anger did depart

The years they passed away my dear
the elven maid played still
her beauty had remained my dear
new suitors came until

One starry summer's eve my dear
the elven maid was singing
her music filled the night my dear
soft through the greenwood ringing

Someone heard her song my dear
a glint came to their eye
before they thought it through my dear
they let an arrow fly

The elven maid looked up my dear
a shaft had pierced her breast
she gave the softest sigh 'Oh dear!'
and laid her head to rest

None knew who did the deed my dear
none came forth to confess
and so came to an end my dear
the proud elven princess

No more to sing or play my dear
no more tormented heart
no more to play at love my dear
no more the swains depart

Do not be vain and cold my dear
you'll get what you deserve
be true and you will find my dear
a love without reserve
