The Ring-Lore Quest, Entry 7: A Curious Concealment

As I heard noises coming outside the vault doors I feared discovery! I looked around for a place to hide but there were none, none except of course the pile of gold itself! I did not hesitate and I jumped under all the gold, covering myself in coins and jewellery. There I lay as still and quiet as I could.

I hadn't properly made sure that I was completely covered by all the gold when the uruk overseer entered the room followed by a few orcs. The overseer looked around carefully. The uruk craved the gold and had no doubt taken it as his own in the days following his master's destruction.

'So, you thought you could steal from me maggot? You thought you could walk in here and touch my shinies? Stuff your maggoty pockets with it?', he asked with a growling voice. I feared for a second that the overseer had seen my nose sticking out from under the gold. But then the overseer yelled: 'Wake up you MAGGOT'!

It was then that I realised I had forgotten about the orc I had hit on the head and dragged in there with me.

'Wake up!', the overseer screamed again. Then I heard the Uruk giving the poor orc a good smacking across the ears and to my surprise the orc actually awoke!

'Whot?', the orc asked confused holding his hands to his head.

'I thought I was pretty clear when last one of you maggots tried to steal my shinies! Put his feet above the fire I did! He squealed like a pig he did!', said the overseer as a dark grin appeared on his torn face. 'You will squeal all the louder!'

The orc was still rather flustered about it all when they grabbed him off the floor and dragged him out of the door. I could still hear him scream: 'No, wait, me did not steal anything! Me swares!'. The orcs left the room, but the overseer lingered in there still. He was sniffing the air as he walked around the pile of gold. Did he suspect anything? I heard him come close to the gold as he bent over to grab a goblet. I held my breath and thought: 'This is it'. If he had taken a good look at the hole that goblet had left behind he could have seen my eye peering through it. The overseer rubbed the goblet, weighed it in his hand and he stood there for a brief moment taking in the splendor of the jewelled handles and the polished gold before he dropped it onto the pile without giving it a second look. He turned around and left the room, closing the doors behind him.

I let out a sigh of relief. 'That was too close', I thought. I quickly appeared from under the gold and took my filled bag with me. I checked whether the overseer had already replaced the guard with a new one, but I was lucky to find the hall outside empty. I knew I needed to leave immediately, but I couldn't help myself and tiptoed back inside to grab the overseer's goblet - it was a nice goblet indeed. Sacked with a good deal of treasure from the vaults of Durthang, I left that place - and I will never turn back. No doubt the overseer has found out by now that someone stole from him. Only a fool would return there now.
