Another morning had come and gone. Midday was near and already he had to start thinking of what to eat in the evening. If he wanted meat he would have to begin soaking it now so that it would be edible later.
He checked the contents of the barrel he had stored meat in for the winter and rummaged it through until he found what he wanted, a head of a sheep. The wool had already been scorched and scraped away but the skin left intact.
He closed the barrel and returned to the house. The lake had not yet frozen over so fetching water was no challenge, he would need it for the head to soak.
He brewed himself some coffee, toasted bread, cut himself a chunk of cheese, fried two slices of bacon and brought a jar of strawberry jam to the table to enjoy with biscuits after the meal was done.
For a while, he sat and nursed his coffee while flipping through one of the books he had chosen to look through. An hour passed and it was time to change the water.
He sat down to rest, about to enjoy another sip from his cup when his eyes were drawn to a knock on the door. The dogs did not bark outside and so this was someone he was familiar with. Another knock and the door opened, his guest letting himself in.
"Birch! It's good to see ye." He rose from his seat.
"G'day to ye, Hagley." His brother stepped inside, brushed snow off his shoulders and kicked his boots off "We be needin' to talk."
"Somethin' happen?" He wondered and made his way to the kitchen to fetch another cup of coffee for himself and Birch.
"T'is 'bout the dinner..." His brother said hesitantly as he sat down at the table.
"Aye? Can't wait fer it. Best meal o' the year."
"Aye... Aye, 'bout tha'..."
