It was already dark and it was just after dinner that he sat on his bed with an odd knife in hand. The blade was like no craft he had ever seen before, must have been made by a foreign blacksmith. From where? He wondered.
The weapon was not quite a dagger and not quite a sword but a craft in between. The blade itself long and curved at the end. The grip was decorative with strange carvings and patterns which he had not seen before, it wasn't even familiar to the patterns carved into the stones of the ruins around.
He had taken time to polish and wash the foreign blade after returning home and pleased with the results he grinned and tilted the dagger back and forth slowly to watch as it caught the soft, flickering flames of the hearth nearby.
What was its story? How did it get there? Bandits? A fallen hero from the south? A knight? Was this some ancient weapon that he had stumbled upon?
He chuckled to himself at the thought and the sound of his laugh brought one of the three dogs running in, his tail wagging back and forth and the dog taking a place beside the bed with his head resting on the mattress.
"Nay, t'is more likely tha' this blade came loose and fell from some unfortunate man." He looked at the dog and smiled, bringing over the callused hand to ruffle up the black and white fur on the dog's head "Ain't tha' right, Spit?" The dog snapped off a bark and jumped onto his hind legs with the front paws stretching out over the mattress and the rump moving back and forth with the excited wagging of his tail.
Another bark and now two extra pair of dogs came rushing in, wandering around the bed and the youngest of the three inviting herself up onto the bed to lay at her master's feet. The third and oldest wandered around finding the pair of boots that sat on the floor, his nose moving down into one of the boots to sniff. The dog's head came shooting back up and his head shook when a sneeze made itself known.
"I told ye not to go sniffin' me boots! T'is yer own fault, ye dolt." The man chuckled and adjusted the pillow against his back and his curious eyes fell back to the dagger. His fingers wandered over the carvings on the handle, rubbing it gently to feel the texture. It wasn't wood. Bone, maybe?
He would have to ponder on it later as the hour grew late and there was plenty to do in the morning. After a another look over his new treasure he leant to the side and placed the weapon onto the nightstand, a final glance wandering over it before he sank down into his bed and his arms tugging underneath his head.
The three dogs did not hesitate to jump onto the bed and get themselves comfortable, earning another chuckle from the man. "Aye, aye. G'night, ye three. I'll see ye again in the mornin'."
