The Letter Under the Door

Katnya picked up the letter as it was slipped under her door with a quizzical look. She opened the door and looked out for whoever had knocked, only to see a slender figure walking away quickly. With a confused frown, she shut the door and opened the letter, her eyes scanning the neat text of the letter.

Alfmaer was safe, living at Ost Guruth with someone who claimed they could help her and her anger issues. She sighed, relieved at the news for she had been worried. She recalled the last time she was in Ost Guruth, on the brink of death before she was healed. Perhaps Alfmaer would find it to be a place of healing and recuperation as well.

She reached the bottom, and the writing changed from the neat, practiced hand to a scrawl, “LOVE,” it said simply beneath Alf’s name.

She sat down into her chair, and almost instantly Brynna had leapt up onto her lap crawling up so her front paws were on Kat’s shoulder. Kat instinctively began to stroke the fluffy feline, re reading the letter a couple of times. She pondered the letter, its contents, the sender, and her feelings about it. She loved Alf, she was sure of it, and the woman would always hold a place in her heart, but part of her suspected it was not something meant to last. Was their time together was a result of her distress after fleeing her husband, or was it something more?

Alaya stood up from where she was sat playing with a small wooden pony with a loud “Mama!” She began to wobble her way towards Kat, holding out the toy. Kat sighed. It was a question for another time.
