Tylva, gear reference

I made this piece to have a better understanding of Tylva's gear, all layers of it, and I'm going to be compiling my notes into a wall of text about character and armour design here, so if that's not something you're interested in and you just want to look at the finished picture, hop over to this node instead. http://laurelinarchives.org/node/44428

Now, starting from the inside and working our way out, first of all we have the physique of the character. Tylva's people are a tall, strong, and hardy folk, which puts her above average by default to start with. Food and nutrition were never a problem for her while growing up, and training for combat and warfare from an early age has left her with a powerful, well developed muscle tone. Strong core and back, arms aren't too beefy though, but she does have killer thighs. Worth keeping in mind is that women can't build the same amount of muscle as men can, that's just biology, their bodies simply produce less testosterone. So while she may be stronger than the average man, she won't be able to match the brawn of a man who has a similar background.
The pose I chose for her here has her flexing and puffing herself up to look a bit bigger.

Moving on to armour, we have the gambeson, which is a padded jacket made out of quilted linen or wool, historically worn either on its own, or with mail or plate armour. In Tylva's case it's the latter, so her gambeson is a bit thinner and less uncomfortable in terms of how much it insulates. It mainly protects against crushing damage, but the many layers of tough fabric can also withstand attacks from sharp weapons, and even keep arrows from penetrating if the gambeson is thick enough.
Next, the chainmail hauberk, one of the most prized possession a soldier could have, and for Tylva it's not different. Hers is dwarf craft, made out of tightly woven riveted links of Ereborian steel, and worth a small fortune. The defence of well made chainmail is so effective that it is almost impossible for slashing or thrusting weapons to penetrate it, but the quality of the links and method used to weave them together is what determines its strength.
And finally we have lamellar armour, small plates of metal or leather that have been laced together, creating a deflective surface which causes attacks to skim over rather than strike and penetrate. Tylva's vest is made out of boiled leather, and is fairly decorative in its design.
Her gauntlet too are of northern make, with an extra layer of thick leather protecting her forearms. Each item of armour she wears is notably of very good quality, and given that each piece has been tailored for her, it is safe to assume she, or at least her family, is wealthy.

Then we have the gear she's picked up along the way to replace what she lost, like her axe, strangely a Gondorian soldier's weapon. Simple and plain to look at, but it certainly gets the job done. Its holster is new, (and something fetched from fantasy rather than history), as is the round shield she's had made in Bree, a pair of rings on the inside which allow it to be strapped to the forearm if needed. There is no colourful design painted on the face of it, she's left it plain for whatever reason.

Let's talk weight for a moment. As you no doubt have guessed, this all has to be rather heavy. And you'd be right, it is. The gambeson is about 3 kg, the chainmail adds 12 kg, and the lamellar another 4 kg. We toss in the axe's 1.2 kg, and the shield's 7 kg, then finally 2.8 kg for the rest of her gear (furs, boots, gauntlets, all that), and we can conclude Tylva's lugging around on roughly 30 kg, or 23 kg when she's decided to leave the shield at home (which is most days she's not expecting to need it). No wonder she needs all that muscle and those strong thighs of hers, right?

What else... well, gear not pictured here would be her bow, which is of Dunlendish make, quiver, and boar spear, as those she mostly uses for hunting. She also keeps a knife in her left boot. The gear she lost is her old axe, shield, helmet, and boots too. Might make a piece with those at some point. Maybe.

I think that's it... may add more when I realise I forgot something.
Questions/comments/whatnots are welcome, of course.
