Background
Gilgarad Maladros was born in the proud city of Dol Amroth, at the time the House Maladros, of which his Father, Marrick, was head, was a small but respected noble family. As all noble children he was tutored throughout his childhood in many different subjects. Westron and Sindarin were the languages he learnt, herb-lore and the history of Arda also but as he grew older his interest in battle and service to Dol Amroth grew also and by the age of 16 he was on his way to becoming a Knight of the Swan and Dol Amroth.
For the first few battles he took part in he served as esquire to his Father, a Knight-Captain at the time, and he quickly became adept at swordplay and strategies. By his 20th year he was a Knight and under the command of his Father he was sent to aid Gondors long battle against the tribes of Harad.
For months they guarded the borders of their beloved Gondor against relentless and brutal attacks from the men of Harad, time after time they would encounter a band of their warriors and soon after hundreds... even thousands of men would be upon the battlefield. War did not turn out to be the glorious event the bards at court back in Dol Amroth had made it out to be, Gilgarad soon found he did not enjoy taking life but remained steadfast knowing he was saving the lives of his countrymen.
After two years guarding the border, Gilgarad and his Father, with their much smaller company of men, returned to Dol Amroth. Prince Imrahil recognised their dedication and loyalty and both were commended for their part in the war most people would hear of only in rumours and whispers. Over the next few years Gilgarad spent his time in court with the other nobles and proved he was not only an excellent swordsman in tournies and duels but also that he possessed a keen mind and sharp wit and soon became renowned for his diplomatic skills.
Prince Imrahil himself requested that Gilgarad be used as one of the voices of a newly formed Order, The Order of Dol Amroth itself, although he was still young and not as experinced as some of his superiors the Prince placed trust in him and he was given the rank of Knight-Captain and was now an envoy for the Order and the City aswell. As envoy he journied not only throughout Gondor but too other lands aswell, he frequently visited Rohan and even visited Eriador on occasion. His travels took him to Rivendell, for months he stayed there as a guest and he learned of the Elves from Elrond who he spoke with often, but the time arrived when he had to leave and go back to Dol Amroth to perform his duties, though when he returned grave news awaited him.
Upon his arrival back in Dol Amroth, his oldest and closest friend Aedann, a fellow member of the Order, told him of his Fathers death not two months ago, at the hands of the Orcs. His Father had been on his way back from Minas Tirith when they were ambushed, one of the survivors told him that it was a raiding party, more than one hundred orcs had been pillaging villages along the coast and that his father and their men were to destroy them. Gilgarad took it upon himself to finish his fathers mission and told Aedann to ready his men.
After a week of searching through burned out towns and villages they finally caught up with the Orcs, scavenging their way through their latest conquest, a small and defenceless fishing village, he assembled his men and let his enemy know of their arrival, a chorus of horns from his Knights almost deafening if not for his helmet, the Orcs attempted to form some sort of resistance but proved no challenge for the Knights and they were quickly destroyed, even those who attempted to flee were felled before they could run and within minutes the Orcs were no more.
Several years after that battle, The Prince Imrahil declared that he would send a portion of the Order to the North, into Eriador. The Prince chose Gilgarad as the leader of the small company that would head North and bestowed upon him the rank of Knight-Commander. Many people had questioned and wondered why the Steward and the Prince decided to send the Order North, Gilgarad did not question his Prince and still does not. His Prince made it very clear to him what it was they were being sent to do: Rumours had reached Dol Amroth of a shadow growing in Angmar, that it was the Witch-King, the Nazgul who had led the destruction of the Northern Kingdoms. He would lead the Northern Order in establishing a strong military presence to help repel the shadow, also to reclaim the ruins of long lost northern kingdoms, Annuminas and Fornost and all relics within that belonged to the Kingdom of the Numenorians. To build their forces with the men of the North and to bring the force back south to assist in the defence of Gondor in the war that was surely coming.
Gilgarad, now preparing he and his men for their departure, sent messages to his closest and most reliable friends to come North with him, amongst them Aedann, his ever reliable brother in arms and advisor readily agreed as did Dragomir a noble and trustworthy friend who Gilgarad thought was a warrior without peer. Within a week he and his men, whose numbers were just over two-hundred, along with Aedann and Dragomir, they set out North to Eriador to a land fraught with more peril then they would have imagined.
They had been in the North for less then a month most of the Knights exploring the lands close by in their companies, helping as many people as they could. Gilgarad, Aedann and Dragomir along with a small group of men at arms where on their way to Trestlebridge along the Greenway, they had heard of disturbances and worries of an invasion into the town, along the way and no more than a few hours ride from the town they were set upon by a large group of Orcs and brigands, the battle was short, the company barely able to respond to the onslaught and soon no more than a handful of men-at-arms were still fighting, Gilgarad stood with Aedann and Dragomir as they tried to repel the attack but as the last of their men fell they were overwhelmed.
A loud screeching awoke Gilgarad, he tried to rise but slowly stumbled to the floor, he rose to see that he was in a cell, though there no guards only a shadowy figure stood at the bars of his cell, his eyes would not focus and the spectre remained a blur, though it spoke to him and in no foul voice of a brigand or cut-throat;
"Rise, we must leave soon, I am Amdir, a ranger of the Dunedain...."
Gilgarad, Dragomir and Aedann had all been taking captive, though they found only a handful of others that were in the battle. The prison had been burnt and all the jailers along with it. Gilgarad and his Knights were now in a conflict that would slowly lead them south and back to their home at Dol Amroth were the last conflicts of this last great war awaited them.....
