The Adventures of Askelin Ashdown: 1, Meeting The Bloody Dawn

A month or so has passed since my fight with Brunmor... I've cleared my head and left Lithindir, we both agreed it was for the best, I think he's not taking the whole thing very well, being reminded so cruelly by his mistakes in the past by our nemesis...

I've been doing odd jobs here and there... Boring stuff like planting trees for some lazy Hobbits in Staddle, building barns for rude farmers who pay me but a pittance of what I deserve... Occasionally I get the offer to escort some drunkard off the streets and to their home, seldom am I paid for it and once I got slapped by some woman for simply helping her.

Bree isn't as friendly as I thought it might have been, but perhaps that's because I haven't found my home yet... My people...

Did I mention that I met a man named Ebold the other day? I don't think I had a chance to write it down. Well I ought to start from the beginning.

It was if by chance that we met. I sat by the counter after a long day's work mucking out some old hag's stables for enough coin for a day or two more rations, I hope I didn't stink too badly of horse muck...

A man clad in armour stood by me, I overheard talk of The Watch, that's when we got talking I believe. I mentioned briefly my encounter with the strange woman who got arrested for attacking one of the Watchmen one night. Ebold seemed quick to defend The Watch, personally I agree with him. The Watch are badly mistreated in this town yet they drudge on through it.

I mentioned to him that I would likely want to work as a Watchman that day... What he said to that changed my life...

He proclaimed himself as the captain of The Bloody Dawn. A mercenary group in Bree. A perfect opportunity for a job. I managed to convince him to let me join, I was trained well, I can follow orders, I can fight! It's about all I can do and do it very well... That and perhaps handyman work, but that's far too boring.

Before I knew it, I was meeting other members of The Dawn, a rowdy bunch who liked their ales and ciders... I met this one woman, Taala was her name. As fiery as the red locks on her hair, she was the one asking me all the questions. I'd like to say I impressed her with my words. But I know very well that words don't mean anything unless one can back them up. I shall be challenged soon enough, I know it. But I'm glad to finally find some fun in this town. Perhaps I can even fit in and actually be part of a family again... A family of sellswords true... But a family nonetheless.

I was also told that The Barracks had a reservation or two. I jumped to the opportunity to get out of the Prancing Pony, while The Barracks were not necessarily as private as the rooms of the inn, it's more homely and rather well looked after, you don't have no fat man and Hobbit lad running after you every five minutes and the best thing? It's free!

I am by far the youngest and likely the most inexperienced among these fellows... I'm going to have to prove myself one way or another, whatever Ebold will have me do, I'll gladly do it... Anything to prove my worth and secure myself within this militia... It's far better than cleaning shite out of a barn for a few mere copper scraps a week!
