Friendship has a peculiar character; it can cross boundaries of race, opinions and heritage, and there may not be a friendship that illustrates that fact more than that between Thirenel and Tinnurion, two elves who grew in friendly bond against all odds.
Tinnurion, more commonly known as Tinnurion, once served under Eöl, an elf of Noble stock who lived in the forest of Nan Elmoth ere he was executed by the Noldor. Tinnurion moved his fellow servants to the protection of the Hithaeglir when Beleriand fell. Though he has ever scorned the sons of Feänor and the Noldor at large, there is one of that folk who he befriended closely. One exception that earned his respect in so great a measure that he even invited him into the house of the Fuinedhil. His name was Thirenel, a High Elf of the Noldor who came with Feänor from Aman to fight Morgoth and retrieve the Silmarils. He partook in the second kinslaying and was later condemned for it.
As time passed, Thirenel broke away from the oaths he had taken and he turned his back to the Noldor who have ever since despised him for it. Though there are many secrets surrounding this peculiar elf, whisperings of both brave and dishonorable deeds during the First Age and beyond, it is known that he has forsaken any desire to return to Aman and has chosen to stay in Middle Earth. The Valar in return have forsaken him and whether he realised this or not is something that has been confined to the depths of his blackened heart. He has ventured far and wide bearing a new name - Zagzeroth - which may yet be called the most daring of all his deeds against his heritage. This new name served him well as he walked amongst Men. For indeed this elf takes great interest in the realms of the Edain and has made unlikely friends amongst them. He would have even given up on his eternal life for the love of a woman if it had been in his power. Alas she passed away before her time.
In his later travels Thirenel devoted his love to every tree, rock and river of Middle Earth. He vowed that he would protect them and indeed all of Arda, even if it would take his life. With a profound preference for the darkest corners of Middle Earth's natural surroundings, Zagzeroth came about an elf who he deemed not to be of his own kin there to slay him, but an elf he could confide in. Near a rather ominous pool in the shadow of the trees of the Old Forest, the seeds to an unlikely friendship between Thirenel and Tinnurion were sown.
Though Zagzeroth and Tinnurion share common interests and have grown a close friendship, they both go about their own ways as they have done so before and they would only call upon each other if the need was great. For while they have not the means to go to war with the Dark Lord on their own, they have nonetheless vowed to work against his evil, lest it should destroy all that is left unprotected in the wake of the carelessness of the Noldor.
