Account of Iriul, Fourth Entry

Journal of Captain Iriul of Tinnudir
Page 4

This page will account more unfortunate news than the second, for I came yet again upon more oppertunities in Bree than I should have taken notice of...Or perhaps it was the wisest I could, it remains to be seen.
A fellowship of six travellers will soon set out of Bree, under lead of a man i've met with a mere three times by chance. I heard talk of this expedition early, but it was only when i realised they might be heading for Evendim that i took a closer look. The name "Gamber" serves me well. Under this alias, the man Welten Oaksford, who's more commonly known as "Sir Cabbage" confided over tankards of ale that his expedition was not his first. He would not disclose to me exactly where he was headed, for I do not honestly think the man know's what the lands are called, but he described Evendim. A land to the northwest, with many ruins. His company as he said, was hired by some dwarf to recover lost tools, or property, or some sort of trinket or loom of importance.
I asked the man plainly, if such a venture could possibly turn a profit and be worth such risk - and his reply was crystal clear, he had in the past treaded tombs and ruins and turned a profit on his findings. Trinkets, treasures and one sword he mentioned in particular. He would not shy away from the tombs in this expedition either, and this is my ward. I know now that he would not speak these words if he knew who's company he was in, for after anonymous warnings were delivered, he no longer claims anything of the sort. But I have seized the oppertunity to come early, to stand ready and act first, instead of hearing the pickaxes heave and crack ancient stones and break open sealed doors.

This matter however, i've taken as much council on it as i can. It is conspicuous to me that the only voices that have spoken for mercy and forgiveness is Ulfey, who is in Welten's company herself, and her friend Thorontir who cut loose an Angmarim in the Shire, who speak so harshly against me in all matters. All else that i have conferred with have urged me to take action, in varying degrees. I've decided to stand at the border, and turn them away before any harm can be done. Me, and all those i've gathered, will see them turn away and only Welten will stand accountable for this. But not even he will die, if i can spring my plans without hindrance.
I failed to avoid the rivalry that wore on Alaghir, my predecessor.
I will try harder to avoid the infamy that he earned when his measures of dealing with the enemy was made to be displayed, and not dealt with in silence.
