The Hillmen and the Strawheads

NOTE -- This is all information to help people understand the history between Dunlendings and Eorlings some more. If your char is knowledgeable, they may know some of these things.

Dunlendings and the Eorlingas have had a long rivalry between them for many years, this thread will help explain what happened and the current situation (and future), about these wildmen!

The Beginning

The ancestors of the Dunlendings were also the ancestors of the Haladin, the second of the Three Houses of the Edain who led her people from East Beleriand to Brethil. During the First Age, the Druedain or Woses, lived amongst these folk and had a strong relationship with them.

After Calenardhon, (now the Mark), was struck by the great-plague, the 'dunlendings' decided to repopulate and live there, in the rich fertile lands were it was mostly peace until the Balchoth (an easterling clan under the control of Dol Guldur), invaded and the Steward Cirion of Gondor called for aid, and Eorl the Young and the Eotheod answered!

The Hatred begins..

In return for the aid in clearing Calenardhon from the trouble of the Balchoth, Cirion granted these lands to Eorl the Young, despite the dunlendings living there. And so the dunlendings were forced out into what the Rohirrim call Dunland (Brown-land OR Hill-land), the Men of Gondor also forcing them out of the White Mountains. And so the rivalry and hatred for the Eorlings started, and for the next five hundred years frequent small attacks would be made on the outlying settlements.

Of Freca and Wulf

In the year 2698 of the Third Age, Freca was born, a nobleman with both blood of a dunlending and an eorling. He payed little heed to the King, despite being called for council, though in the year TA 2754, he and a large group of men came to council to demand Helm to give his daughter to Freca's son, Wulf.

Helm denied, calling Freca fat, and so in rage, he challenged Helm to a fight. And so they two men walked out of town, and once they were a fair distance away, Helm struck Freca so hard on the nose with his fist that he died from the blow; thus giving Helm the title Hammerhand.

In the year, TA 2758 (259 years before Frodo leaves the Shire), the dunlendings invaded! Led by Wulf Frecason, they invaded Rohan from Isengard, and drove Helm and his men into the Hornburg, later to be known as Helm's Deep. Durin the Long Winter, when Helm and his sons perished, Wulf sat in the throne in Edoras, as King of Rohan.

In the year, TA 2759, Helm's nephew, Frealaf, came to Edoras, and killed Wulf by driving a sword through his neck, and so Frealaf became the next king of Rohan.

Saruman the Wise

One of the biggest allies of the dunlendings in the War of the Ring was Saruman, who used their hate of the Strawheads to his advantage. And so he told them false words, such as that they killed and burned their captives alive.

All Isengard must be emptied; and Saruman has armed the wild hillmen and herd-folk of Dunland beyond the rivers, and these also he loosed upon us- Chapter VII - The Two Towers

When Grima Wormtongue became advisor to the King, Saruman used this to stop the patrols on the outskirts of Rohan, so the dunlendings and Uruk-hai could build up their strength.

After the Second Battle of the Fords of the Isen, dunlendings made their way to Helm's Deep..

The Battle of the Hornburg

Along with Uruk-hai and orcs, Dunlendings were also present on the battle field at the hornburg, making up around 2000 of the infantry present there. They did not play a major role in the battle, they simple added more weapons to help.

'Yet there are many that cry in the Dunland Tongue,' said Gamling. 'I know that tongue. It is an ancient speech of men, and once was spoken in many western valleys of the Mark. Hark! They hate us, and they are glad; for our doom seems certain to them. "The king, the king!" they cry, "We will take their king. Death to the Forgoil! Death to the Strawheads! Death to the robbers of the North!" Such names they have for us. Not in half a thousand years have they forgotten their grievance that the lords of Gondor gave the Mark to Eorl the Young and made alliance with him. That old hatred Saruman has inflamed. They are fierce folk when roused. They will not give way now for dusk or dawn, until Théoden is taken, or they themselves are slain.' - Chapter VII - The Two Towers

After the battles was lost for the Hillmen, they were shocked..

But a great many of the hillmen had given themselves up; and they were afraid, and cried for mercy.

The Men of the Mark took their weapons from them, and set them to work.

~~~~~~~~
The men of Dunland were amazed; for Saruman had told them that the men of Rohan were cruel and burned their captives alive.
After they had finished rebuilding and reparing the damage they caused, they went back to Dunland, and did not disturb the Eorlings again.
