TCoS chapter 2 Part 6 - The Library of Rivendell

To rivendell and deciphering the scrolls

Crossing the Ford

“Our journey is almost at its end.” Oronir returned what had not gone into the trap to his pack and sat with some food with the girl and the man.
“One more day.” Said the elder. He smiled.
The girl grinned.
“You shall have to lead the way Leothross, for I have never been to Rivendell, and you seem to speak Elvish as well.” Oronir swallowed some food thoughtfully.
Neremnes yawned widely, “Am I needed for any more discussion? I don't think my eyes can stay open much longer...”
Leothross smiled at Neremnes, “Sleep. It shouldn't be difficult from here. The terrain is steeper and harder, but if you know the signs, you can find the valley. Then...”
Oronir rolled up in his blanket grinning, “Can you do first watch, Leothross?”
“Of course.” He pulled a book from his bag and walked a ways off to lean against the trees.
Neremnes held her hand over her mouth to stifle another yawn - unsuccessfully - then curled up close to her resting steed and was asleep in moments.

Leothross’ watch had passed without trouble. He shook himself, closed his book and headed back to the camp, gently shaking Oronir’s shoulder. Oronir mumbled, weariness evident in his voice. He cleared his throat as he got to his feet.
“I’ll wake you at dawn.”
Leothross nodded absently and wrapped himself in his cloak before slipping into a deep sleep.

As Oronir spotted the first light of day in the sky he lit a fire, hoping to wake the others by the noises of nature rather than from a rude awakening. Light showed two wolves caught in the trap he prepared and he grinned, glad they had worked. He shifted the traps aside while he waited for the two to awaken. Neremnes woke to such noises. She pushed herself up off the grass and brushed herself down, yawning widely. Her steed had left her side during the night, but returned before she woke up. She ran her hand along the horse's neck with a smile then greeted Oronir. "Morning."
Leothross opened his eyes and pushed himself into a sitting position with a stretch. "Ahh... "
Oronir smiled as he poured a hot beverage and handed each a cup, "Morning."

Neremnes took the cup eagerly and wrapped her hands around it as she sipped. "Thank you."
“Oh, thank you, Oro. We will want this more after the ford, I reckon.”
“I must say, I am anxious to lay my eyes on the rumoured beauty of Rivendell.” Oronir gathered together his gear.
Neremnes stayed silent, apparently not swayed by the tales. She sipped the beverage calmly.
“It lives up to the tales, do not worry.”
Neremnes pulled up her steed and saddled him. "Let's get going if we want to be there before dark." She packed up the few belongings she had scattered close to her and swung her satchel over her shoulder.
“Indeed. We need to get started on fording this river.” Leothross lead his horse down to the river.
They mounted their horses. Leothross moved first, carefully finding a way through the water. Oronir followed, then Neremnes. They did this again to the centre of the ford before deciding the last part was shallow enough to ride through calmly. A swell of water suddenly jumped up at Neremnes’ horse’s legs and he spooked, galloping past the others to the banks.
“Woah!” Neremnes took a moment collecting herself as her horse bolted, then pulled him in a tight circle to walk back to the others. She patted his neck. “Poor boy…”
Oronir and Leothross calmly urged their horses through the last bit of water.
“Well, that was not so bad.” Leothross glanced at the two, smiling as Neremnes brought her horse around. “On we go, then.”

The Entrance to Rivendell

The moon had risen by the time the company had reached the pass into the valley.
“Mae govannen!” Leothross halted before two Elves guarding the pass. He spoke in Sindarin, “We are travellers seeking council from Elrond’s library.”
They agreed, recognising his face.
“Every step in Imladris is watched.” They warned, and then allowed them to pass.
He smiled, “Of course. May the stars shine on your path.”

They walked between the mountains to the edge of the path and halted as they gazed upon this Last Homely House. Leothross could not watch where he rode, but looked over the valley with admiration still. Oronir was much the same.
“I admire the beauty of Rivendell, and someone certainly under-spoke such a thing…but Dol Amroth holds much more beauty to me.” She spoke the last line softly with a small smirk. She halted by Leothross for a moment.
Oronir joined Neremnes and stared in awe at the beauty of the city of Rivendell from high up here, wondering at the marvels he would see once they arrive at the valley.
“Words never do it justice... and memory cannot capture it all.” Leothross smiled and lead them down the slope. Oronir, anxious to more, followed, as did Neremnes.

Rivendell

Oronir stared at the immense building and the amazing valley. He just couldn’t believe this place was real. Neremnes looked around in similar awe. Leothross inhaled deeply, closing his eyes and letting the peaceful breeze calm him. He held the reins of his horse and stood motionless for some time.
Oronir cleared his throat, “Leothross, are you sure we will be fine here? Because I feel like an intruder.”
Neremnes hugged her warm cloak to her. “Me too.”
Leothross opened his eyes, a genuine and contented smile, the first in a long while, breaking across his face, “I am sure we will. Come, let's go see about the library.”
“Lead the way, I have a feeling I need not guard you here.”
Leothross laughed, “That is the truth, Oronir.” He ran his hand across the bridge’s stone as they walked.
Neremnes buried her face in her cloak, all apart from her eyes, and curled her fingers into the warm fabric. “It's cold. I want to go inside.”

Leothross pushed back his hood as they stepped inside the doors into the warmth of the Homely House while Neremnes unwrapped herself from her cloak and dragged the heavy thing along the ground now as the warmth enveloped her. She yawned, too tired for awe and amazement. Oronir dusted his cloak of snow just before entering, the warm air rushing in his face.
Oronir whispered to Leothross, “This is a wondrous place, never in my wildest dreams did I imagine...”
Neremnes wandered absent-mindedly to the great statue in the middle of the room and dipped her hand in the water curiously.
“Hey…!” Oronir rushed behind her and pulled her hand back just after it touched the water.
“What?”
Oronir waved his hand at her and whispered, “Best not to do that. It might be holy water, you know?” He looked sideways, “They may not look kindly upon it.”
She stuck out her bottom lip. “Yes, Oronir.”
Leothross seemed oblivious to their conversation. “ Is it not an incredible place? And the library is the most fantastic thing… If you or Nemmy would like to explore, I can just go talk to someone in the library and leave you to it.”
“Are we allowed?” Oronir turned back to him.”
“I do not see why not, but I imagine we would have to ask. Just, not all have an interest in such things anyway.”
Neremnes ignored their conversation and wandered around the main room.
“You’d better ask, because I can’t watch the girl all the time. We may have to stay here a few days.” Oronir watched Neremnes go.
The other chuckled, “All right. I shall ask.” He turned and headed for the ramp up the levels.

Neremnes glanced at a table beside a very well dressed Elf. She picked up two shiny silver coins, and hid one down her sleeve. She turned the other over and over in her hand as if she’d only picked up the one. The Elf by the table gave her a look, and motioned for her to put it down. She shrugged and returned it to the pile before walking away.
“Neremnes, please try to stay near me. These Elves do not play around with offences.”
She smiled at him. "Of course." She put her hand in her pocket and the coin slid inconspicuously down her sleeve.
He gave her a suspicious glance. “We might be here a day or two...ah, Leothross.”
“All right, I spoke to one of the Elves of the Scholar’s guild. It sounds like we may be able to stay in the guest rooms down the way for a bit of money. And, as long as you are with me, we should be able to look around the library. It sounds like they may have what we are looking for.”
