I admit, at first it un-nerved me. A tree, with eyes peering out of its bark, like two blinking knot-holes in its wood, branches moving like true limbs... and a laugh from what I suppose was a mouth. But then, I think.. a dog can blink, and laughter is no sign of intelligence. Even an adle-pated fool can laugh.
An animal then, that takes a tree shape, like a butterfly that colours itself to be a leaf, a fly that looks like a wasp. Nothing unseely about it, nothing that 'cannot be'. An animal embellished by childrens' tales to become more than it truly is. Dangerous, yes, its sheer size makes it so, but nothing unbelievable about it. Some type of troll, of wood rather than stone. An axe or a fire, no doubt, would tame it were that needed.
I do not understand why he thought it would return his words. It saw us, yes, heard our words ... I doubt now though that it really comprehended them. A mightily interesting thing however, and worthy of note. The world becomes a little more known.
