This piece of a Rohirric lay has been hastily scrawled onto the back of a parchment listing fulfilled shipment orders. It seems to have been translated to Westron from it's original language, although there is no source text to be found anywhere, suggesting that whoever had been translating this had memorized the lay by heart. The contents of the poem appears to be a lament of sorts, written during the Long Winter of the Year 2738.
When War Claims All (T.A 2738)
Translated by Eadmund, Son of Eadyg
T'was cool spring day when savages came,
Borne by evil winds through forted gap,
Savages, they say, no blood could tame,
Tearing hearth and home with jaws that snap,
Thus cold was come and shadow fell,
As the wicked foe came east hither,
Through crop and land where horses dwell,
And caused the flowers to wither,
Hence came Wulf, the bastard son,
Lay false claim to Riddermark,
Sat on throne where King was none,
Where the Golden Hall lay dark,
Sad Meduseld the strong and fair,
Fallen from her regal glory,
No song was thus sung in the air,
No word there was to tell story
Thus the hard, despairing cold was come,
With winter's unsettling, rising thrall,
Never harp in home there was to strum,
When war and death was waged to claim all
(Poem written by the player of Alekay Darrowfeld.)
