THE BATTLE FOR SARNUR
( An impromtu adventure into the depths of Sarnur )
The Warband Officers discussed rumours they had heard of stirrings in the depths of Sarnur a place inhabited by the Dourhands and below in the icy crevices other foul creatures such as Trolls and worse. The warrior Ridaran was also able to join the fellowship which was good news and would prove a good testing ground for his skills. Tagos, Elisbeth and Khalis had all walked in Sarnur before but had never managed to battle their way fully through it. Many of the denizens still roamed freely.
So with no other members of the Warband being available Elisbeth,Tagos and Ridaran made their way to Thorins Hall where they prepared their equipment and clothing for the regions cold weather was well known for taking the lives of those less prepared. They met up with Khalis en route at a small campfire where they found his sharing the fire of one of the dwarven scouts charged with keeping an eye on the Dourhands. The foursome then rode up the great stairway and onward into the depths of Sarnur.
The party were greeted by a few bands of Dourhands who sought to test the ability of these latest intruders to their realm. The Warband quickly carved a sway through the several waves of warriors and progressed to the icy passageway which spiralled downwards into the depths of the glacial caves.
They soon came across Dourhands and Trolls together, it seems the dwarves were attempting to almost train the Trolls to do their bidding. One thing was certain as soon as both saw the Warband members all of whom were Elves they both mutually attacked the fellowship. And so a new wave of running skirmishes ensued as the fellowship battled their way through the caverns.
As they battled along a frozen riverbed Elisbeth spotted a split in the rockface, quickly she ascertained it had a floor which looked worn over time by the passage of the denizens which laired in these depths. The fellowship ventured into the gap and once more travelled downwards deeper into the depths of Sarnur.
The sight which greeted them was a monstrous one. Armoured Trolls stood in their path, their bodies clad in armour made from a dark metallic substance. The fellowship was quickly spotted by the more alert variants of their cousins which the fellowship had met above. The battle had taken on a more ferocious aspect, Khalis took the foreground alongside Ridaran. Khalis used his shield as best as he could to protect the duo as they battled side by side, Ridaran's twin weapons biting deep into the Trolls armour. Over their heads flew volley after volley of arrows launched by Tagos from his mighty bow, and intertwined with these was flashes of lightning and fire being issued from the stones in Elisbeth's hands. The Trolls were dispatched but it was obvious to all the tide of the next battles could easily be turned against them for these proved to be mighty adversaries.
The fellowship battled two and fro seeking a way deeper into the depths but the brief chances of respite in between the skirmishes were not enough to seek a way down. Thus it was that Khalis made the decision to climb down the rockface, a leap of faith some might say. He managed to work his way down to the next level and quickly the others followed. No sooner had the party regrouped than a massive onslaught began for they had been sighted by a huge fire breathing Dragon!
With a mighty roar it launched its attack onto the fellowship and this immediately caught the eye of the many Trolls and Orc minions who also rushed to slay the invaders to their domain. The fellowship battled for what seemed like hours, again Khalis taking the foreground using his shield in an attempt to hold back the hoard that was upon them all the whilst screaming in Elvish to get the attention of the foul creatures.
Ridaran stood once more two weapons in hand face to face with the armoured Trolls their blades biting into their flesh.
Tagos, switched to his old First Age bow for the dragon was vulnerable to it's specific damage enchantment and standing high on a ice pile unleashed a deadly rain of arrows.
Elisbeth now knew the time for concentration was at hand for she had to carefully balance her powers between keeping her Warband warriors alive and also when chance prevailed rain down destructive lightning on their adversaries. The fellowship at one stage had to tactically retreat the onslaught was so great but after an unknown allotment of time the Dragon and its minions were slain.
The mighty Dragon slain the fellowship then steadily fought their way back to the surface the only witnesses to their achievements being the dents in their weapons and armour.
