The Missing Caravan

The caravan rolls down the road from Faldham, they had just passed through with their cargo bound for Hawick, food stocks for the harvest as requested by the Thane. Emdar rode behind the wagon seated upon his horse, thoughts of Wulfreda filled his mind and of the talk they had the previous night, he would not have usually accompanied such a minor delivery but he had needed to clear his head.

These thoughts still filled his mind as they neared the forest to the right of the path, The five Hawthorn guardsmen tasked with escorting the delivery keep a watchful eye on the forest, always vigilant for brigands on the road. All was quiet for a minute or so, the only sound the clinking of armor as the guards walked and the rumbling of the wagons wheels on the path.

Then there was a shout, the guardsman at the front of the caravan had time to point towards the forest and sound his warning as a volley of arrows flew from the trees striking the guards readied shields and embedding in the ground around them, arrows fell around Emdar as he attempts to reign his startled horse in, until a lucky shot finds its mark, embedding itself into his horses neck killing the steed instantly and throwing him from it.

The ground rushes up to meet him as he hits it hard, pain reverberating through him from the impact as he pulls himself up from the ground, still dazed from the fall as he quickly surveys the situation it becomes clear to him, the driver of the cart, a kindly old man lies dead across the seat of the wagon, slain by an arrow, his guardsmen have formed up around the wagon, steel drawn and a shout goes out as their assailants charge from the forest towards them. Emdar draws his swords and prepares to meet their charge with his men.

( OOC information: The caravan does not reach Harwick and no word has been heard from Emdar since leaving Faldham )
