Journal entry page # 149 - Reaching the Gap of Rohan

We made it all the way to the Gap of Rohan. Yet the road was not without danger, but thanks to our skilled fellowship we have pulled through. Last time I wrote we were left off in Dunland under a Rock formation that gave us a little cover. The next morning I felt miserable, cold feet, wet gear, stiff neck. Our companion Leofmund was missing, he left a note warning we should head south quickly while he distracted patrols of dunlendings. After some hesitation we continued our road south.

Our way through Dunland provided almost no cover, the country consisted of many grass covered hills with scattered trees and rocks. It seemed Dunland was not inhabited, it was so quiet everywhere it felt like we were heading into an ambush, but it was not so. Yet after hours of strolling south we heard the howls of hounds and wolves which probably caught our trail. We quickened our pace but the hounds were faster. They looked fierce, with sharp teeth and black skin a group 7 or 8 hungry wolves were running towards us. We braced ourselves for the impact. I managed to kill one with a javelin, before another threw itself on my shield. While I stuck my spear into its furry back, the wolf was still trying to bite my legs until I pushed the spear deeper into his body. I saw Arunel heaving and slashing his sword around him, cutting a wolf into bits. Tidhelm was quick for his age as his blades slashed a black skinned wolf his throat. One wolf managed to bite Arunel in the leg, luckily Wulfreda dispatched of the foul beast. We had a quick rest, to tend to Arunels wound. More howls could be heard in the distance so we had to run for it.

We managed to find a resting place, it was a narrow path between high rocks leading south towards an edge. When we looked over the edge, feelings of suprise and despair filled my chest. Dunlendings as far as my eye could see, a massive camp that held an army of the wild men. Horses, swords, shields, fires and tents, this was an army preparing for a war. That is why the Dunland fields were so empty., all warriors gathered here! War will come to Rohan, maybe sooner as I would have feared. I still need to train to be a Rider! We have lingered in Bree for too long! As we tried to find a way around the warcamp we found a wounded Rider of Rohan sitting against a pole with a bad leg. We helped him up and Arunel and me dragged him along. He was a rider of Walsteng that got seperated from a patrol. He gave us directions to a Rohirrim camp. After hours of dragging this man along we found it. I never felt so delighted as I saw the green flags with white steeds, we have made it! As thanks for rescuing a kinsman the Rohirrim gave us food and a place to rest. Thus ends our journey to the Gap of Rohan. It is a journey to remember, besides the lack of food and a good nights sleep, I gained new allies and learned a lot about the lands down south. Our fellowship ends here, Rohan is close now. We must find out what the situation is here at the border of Rohan and report back to the Esquires in Bree, somehow...
