Chronicle Content

Foreword
I have written this book in the first place for myself. It is part of my own seeking of my history, yet in time it became much more. It became an encyclopedia of Dwarven history, and more generally, of what it means to be a Dwarf.
During my travels I became particularly aware of the fact how little men know about my people, and by Aule we are a peculiar folk. So I decided to write my observations and findings not in my language, but in those of all, so that all may learn about us.
I have done my best in providing a substantiated overview of Dwarvish lineage, history, and culture. Though one thing needs be said from the beginning. Dwarves may not have the beauty of Elves, the passion of men, or the light-heartedness of Hobbits. Yet what Dwarves have, and not too short, is honour. And in that honour lie our greatest treasures. The secrets of our kind. And those secrets are and will remain guarded until death. Tell a dwarf something, anything, and tell him not to tell anyone, and he would stand through any torture and die before sharing – even or especially if it is merely a recipe of your favourite ale.
I hope this will be of help to someone some day, and may this be the legacy that I, Balgolin, leave my people and the people of Endor.

Balgolin of Thelor's folk
