Hushed Night

Theylwe had hunted them throughout the day and well into the night. The small band of orcs were agile and had evaded him several times, but none could escape his tracking. He picked off their border patrol earlier and made sure that there was no detection. The orcs camped in the forest where they thought they were safe from any foes. How wrong they were.

Theylwe approached the small camp quietly with cautious foosteps as he perched himself on an out of sight branch. The branch was just close enough that he could view their various actions, but he was hidden from them. Theylwe calculated several different formations of attack before deciding a swift ambush. In and out without too much complication. He hefted a javelin in one hand while the other held his poised spear. With smooth movements he aimed his javelin and let it loose with a gust of air.

Even before the javelin hit its target, Theylwe sprang from his vantage point, his spear angled downwards as he struck it through the back of the orc just below him. After his initial strike, he heard the muffled thump as his javelin nailed his target to the ground. Then, Theylwe soared into action.

The orc camp was thrown into chaos after Theylwe slew the first two of their number. They managed to ready their defenses, but not before he glided over to the nearest enemy and slammed his spear into its throat. Theylwe quickly made his way over to the next orc just as a blade leapt towards his way. He parried the blow with astounding speed and sent a riposte that ended the vile creature's existence, but a few seconds later. His former target had charged him only a moment earlier and Theylwe spouted an inward curse as he slung his spear on his back and unveiled the sword at his side.

The sword shimmered in the light of the campfire and made the orcs pause in terror at the elvish blade. Without a delay, Theylwe impaled his foe and sent a spinning blow that bisected it with ease. The remaining orcs returned to their senses as they rushed over; their mouths gaping in blood lust. Theylwe had a calm, but cold stare as he sidestepped the first orc's strike and responded with a chop that decapitated it, before stepping into a lunge that speared through another's neck. He moved back as the orcs' bodies fell to the ground with a clatter of armor.

One last orc remained alive, and by the looks of it, it was the chieftain of the band. It would have towered over its fellows if they weren't lying dead on the ground. The fire had died down and only the slightest crackles could be heard if it wasn't for the chieftain's howling. It spat out its black tongue and uttered a war cry as it brought its massive hammer into play. Theylwe caught sight of the orc's weapon as it was launched to his side. Theylwe sprang back as a flurry of blows came his way. He dodged most of them, but the orc was tireless in its advances. One blow came close to contact with Theylwe's head, but he brought his sword just in time to block it. The sword rung out as the two weapons clashed, but the hammer proved the stronger; the sword was flung to the sidelines.

The chieftain cackled maliciously as it sent another blow with his stout hammer. Theylwe evaded it and jumped backwards, reaching for his spear. The chieftain soared through the air and with a double-handed grip, it cast its hammer above its head for the final hit. The foul orc cried with rage and fury, but its hammer didn't connect. Only then did it realize that it had driven inself halfway down the length of Theylwe's spear. Theylwe grimaced as he yanked out the spear with a flourish of blood and took a deep breath as the battle came to a close..

Ithil was lit in the sky with an ominous glow; it had witnessed the night's bloodshed as it had many times before. The night's hunt was over, but tomorrow was a different matter entirely. A war still to fight; a thousand more skirmishes to win.
