I could not believe my luck this morning. I saw a notice that asked for guards to travel with a caravan to Esteldin. The pay was alright and food provided. However, only the first four to arrive would get the job. I had to run to the meeting place which was at the eastern gate in Bree-town. Lady luck smiled upon me as I was the fourth to arrive. The employeer was an old man, Mr. Torkee, and I have to say that the years had not been kind to him. With him he had two younger boys, I suspect around my age. After the short introduction I quickly learned they were his sons. While they were busy with preparing their wagons, I took the chance to introduce myself to the three men I would be working with. Oh joy. One of them, a Jack Daynels, were a drunkard. I knew from the smell and the looks. His clothes were torn and filthy and his breath...oh...how horrible. The other two was Kan Jaldir, and Halgar Carrickson. Kan was around my age, long blonde hair and a beige apparel. He was a happy and eager fellow. Halgar on the other hand was old, very old. And very grumpy. I suspect he did not really want to take this job, but was in dire need of money. Anyway, at the command of Mr. Torkee, we headed out the gate and took the path towards the Shire.
Now we are sitting around a campfire, just outside the borders of Buckland. Tomorrow we will continue onwards towards Esteldin.
