Background

They formed out of necessity. They weren't heroes or warriors, they were traders, craftsmen who simply got tired of the endless raids and thefts on the trading routes. While they were adept at making weapons they barely knew how to use them and after several failed attempts at stopping the bandits and some fatalities they were close to giving up.
Aykin Openshaw was a simple man on the surface, a carpenter like his father and like his father he had also trained himself to use the weapons and tools he made and although he was by means as good as the soldiers and "adventurers" that peppered the land he could hold his own.
He came across these so-called sentries of the trade route whilst transporting his own goods through Bree land and sensing that, even if misguided by their own motivation, they were trying at least to do some good where the military couldn't or maybe wouldn't for whatever reason.
He agreed to join them whilst they were in a seeming state of disarray and reluctantly assumed the role of leader. He called upon an old friend and retired military officer to join them and provide rudimentry training. The groups defiance against failure began to grow as they gained confidence with the weapons they not only crafted but also wielded.
