Call of Duty

Veryacano packed the last of his bags and placed them in front of the door. He was now all set with full campaign preparations. Rations, blankets, spare uniforms and many other things of necessity. He was probably one of the most eager amongst his kin to leave, for his anguish for his fallen kin was too great and his hatred for the dunlendings was now aflame.

The fact that a warband of the southern men had dared venture so far up north was shocking on its own but that was the least of it. Loranthael had delivered the news that the outpost near Tal Bruinen was attacked. Lead by Tur Anglachelm, all present members of the House of Vanimar immediately mobilized and swiftly moved to the area, in hopes of pushing back the assault. When the company arrived there, there was little left of the outpost, for it was put to flame and the attackers were long gone. Amidst the ashes, bodies of two fallen warriors of Vanimar were found, mutilated. The Hammer Lord Tindir himself was found not far away, pierced by many arrows and wounded gravely but clinging to life. Lord Tindir was carried back to the Valley of Imladris to be tended to by Lord Elrond's healers. Through Lord Tindir's account it was revealed that the attackers were indeed the savage clansmen of the south.

The Vanimareans thereafter, gathered in the halls of fire. Oaths of vengeance were sworn and there Lord Anglachelm gave orders to prepare for a campaign. A campaign to avenge the fallen and rid the land of the threat of these evil men. It seemed to all that the new Hammer Lord Tindir would not be able to recover from his wounds in the near future. Therefore, Lord Anglachelm ordered the former Hammer Lord, Veryacano to take up his black uniforms lead the Order of Hammer once again for the campaign.

Since his dismissal by Lord Anglachelm from the leadership of the Order of Hammer, Veryacano was nothing but idle in the Valley of Imladris and suddenly now, the Lord ordered him to take command of the Hammers again. Daegond and Themodir seemed very pleased with the Lord's decision but Veryacano did not know what to think of this. Not only did Lord Anglachelm dismiss him so very formally, but he also replaced him with Tindir, who was arguably his partner in crime in overlooking the Lord's orders. All this had been heavy on his soul, for in his thoughts, their actions were righteous and necessary.

Still, Veryacano was not one to avoid duty when it called. It was how he had risen to Lordship, by heeding the call when there was need. Though he had bent the rules at times he'd never betray his Lord. He was loyal to the end and when asked he'd say: ''Those who defend authority against rebellion must not themselves rebel.''

As he finished his preparations and sat down at his desk to think, he found himself honing his anger and contemplating his next move. As the hotheaded Noldor of the Hammer voiced words of vengeance and war, some voices had disagreed. Calling for mercy and meek measures and some even dared to question his tactics. But Veryacano would not hear it. He'd call them ''the lighthearted'' when calm and when in wrath, he'd call them many other names and rebuke them. He had seen more years that any of those in halls that day and he had spent all of those years fighting, waging war and leading soldiers. He knew everything there was to know of war and he was wise enough to know that moderation was the worst way to handle a war. For the only thing that kept the evil things at bay was fear. Now it seemed that fear was no more and the strenght of the elves no longer deterred the the enemies of the Eldar. It was Veryacano's intention to re-establish that fear and he'd do it by the Hammer.

Alone in his chambers, he brooded long in thought and in his anger he came up with many sinister ways to conduct the upcoming campaign. In war, Veryacano's tactics were tenacious, bold and straightforward. Complicated tactics he found to be ever failing, for he knew well that nothing really ever goes as planned in war. Instead of prudent and step by step tactics, he favored speed and decisive manoeuvres. And so Veryacano sat down over whatever maps he could find of the region of Enedwaith and surrounding lands and designed the vengeance of the Noldor.
