The diary of Kalesiar's father, part 1

The diary starts with the description of the surroundings of Esteldin the morning  when the caravan with Kalesiar's parents departs to the East. It was written by Kalesiar's father, Mirdir. Many pages are damaged beyond repair for it's seen many events and was carried through weather both cold and warm, both humid and dry. The diary was sent to Elrond by an unknown ranger a few months after the caravan was ambushed beyond the Misty Mountains in 2912 of the Third Age.

The diary was eventually given to Kalesiar by lord Elrond once Kalesiar returned to Imladris many decades ago.

The Departure

Day 1

This morning was very misty, the haze in the air was resolute to cover the blue skies and the warm sun. It is late spring, and we shall be good on our trip, for the weather should stay good at this time of year. The occasional rain will not stop us, not now that the servants of the foul lord are after us. It is with sadness that we leave our ancestral homeland, but... for the sake of our child, and for the sake of our love, Hiryana and I have decided to make this journey to the land of Dale, where some of the ranger friends who dwell there will protect us, far from the eyes of the darkness.

We have prepared everything. There are four rangers who will lead the caravan to the Mountains. They have agreed that the path should lead through Lin Giliath to the south, where we will traverse the coast of Nen Harn and travel the road that leads north of the Chetwood forest in order to reach the western Lone-lands. The road will be perilous, for the patrols there have ceased during the last few months, but I expect we will manage to go through safely, for my comrade rangers are well trained and battle-ready. The rest of the caravan is filled with traders from Esteldín, and a group of sturdy folk who have gained trust of the rangers during some events in the upper North-downs. I do not trust them too much, but they seem to be the sort who would repell an attack of Orcs if need be. Therefore, I will not show my mistrust in them but I will be careful.

Day 2

The end of second day of our journey comes to an end. We have reached the southern shore of lake Nen Harn. The first day was very exhausting for our horses, for the humidity of the lake surroundings did no good to their stamina. I hope we will escape the shores first thing in the morning. These mosquitos and flies are a real nuissance, and nothing seems to make them go away, not even fire. Sleeping will be next to impossible in this place.

Day 3

Halfway to Weather Hills, we have encountered a pack of bandits who were stalking us ever since we left Chetwood forest. The bandits were probably interested in the goods that the traders were bringing with them, for their horses are hauling precious ore, valuable for the Elves of Rivendell. Fortunately, the group of sturdy men I mentioned earlier, they were powerful enough to annul the threat perfectly.

Hiryana and Kalesiar were frightened in facing a threat once again, for their lives were endangered in two occasions like this, back in Ost Forod and near the haven of Esteldín. It hurts my heart to see them this scared, and I feel no remorse for providing arrows imbued with deadly poison to the archers in our caravan.

After a short break some miles away from the incident, we decided to make a break and rest until tomorrow at the camp we've established here.

Day 4

The page has been damaged beyond repair and the visible text is beyond comprehension. The only sentence that did make sense was: "We have reached the eastern portion of Weather Hills ... our journey for this day ends under the Weathertop."

Some of the pages missing here...

Day 8

The gates of Imladris! How many years have passed since I last saw this vale, and the fair Elves of Rivendell. Lord Elrond, a master of knowledge and the one who oversees this fine settlement, is a great inspiration to me and Hiryana. I believe that he will remember me, for our last meeting was quite interesting. I cannot wait to introduce Hiryana and Kalesiar to him, he will be pleased to see that I have been happily married and that my child carries the blood of Dúnedain.

... to be continued ...
